Warehaven Wanderers
The club that hits first, then plays fair, and has never got that order right.
The club
Warehaven Wanderers, formed 1893 in a dock town that had been raided twice in living memory, built their entire footballing character on not being caught out. The club's founding principle was that you establish yourself in the opening minutes or you spend the afternoon being walked over, and it is fair to say the local history supported the theory at the time.
The rule has survived unchanged, and it is the narrowest margin between good and bad football in the league. Wanderers open by defecting: an early press, an early hard challenge, a statement. From then on they are pure reciprocators, as measured and proportionate as anyone. Behave with them from minute two and they will behave for the rest of the game.
The problem is minute one, and everybody at Suspicion Road knows it. That opening challenge is free to throw and expensive to own, because a reciprocating opponent answers it, Wanderers answer that, and a fixture that both sides would have been happy to play openly becomes a war neither of them wanted. Warehaven have spent a century starting fights they did not need, against sides that would have shaken hands.
On the pitch
Wanderers defect on the opening duel every time, then copy their opponent from that point on. Against a naive side the early aggression is pure profit. Against anyone who returns it, the match locks into the mutual pressing spiral that their own opening move created, and Warehaven's decent reciprocating instincts spend the next eighty-nine minutes paying for the first one.

Suspicion Road
Suspicion Road, 22,900, the smallest ground in the league, tight to the pitch on three sides and directly under the flight path of the harbour cranes. The tunnel exit faces the away end, which the club insists is an accident of the 1930s rebuild.
The supporters
The Suspicion Road crowd is the most defensive in the league in both senses, quick to assume the worst of a referee and quick to be proved half right. Their song, sung early, is nobody's mug.
The manager: Cole Warren
A full back at four clubs, all of them relegated at least once while he was there, which he mentions himself. Appointed at Warehaven on the promise that his side would not be walked over.
Warren is the most defensive-minded manager in the league in temperament as well as tactics, and the most likely to be proved half right in a way that does him no good. He arrived at Suspicion Road with a mandate not to be soft, and he has honoured it to the letter, including in the fixtures where it has plainly cost him.
His coaching after the first minute is genuinely sound. Wanderers are proportionate, well organised and quick to respond, and against a side that behaves from minute two Warren gets a controlled, competitive game and often a result. He is a better reciprocator than his reputation, which is the frustrating part.
The opening move is the argument he has been having for years, with pundits, with his own supporters and occasionally with himself. He has conceded publicly that it turns willing opponents into enemies, and he has not stopped doing it, on the grounds that the one time he does not, somebody will take advantage.
"You get one warning off me, and it arrives before the game does. Everything after that is on you."
